Family Literacy

picture of a man reading to babySupporting early literacy in the home strengthens literacy skills in both adults and children, builds stronger relationships, and encourages life-long learning. In this guide we provide a variety of literacy resources to set you and your family up for literacy success.

Family Literacy Kits

It is important that educators, families, and community members all help support children in their language and literacy journey. Children need support at home and in the community not just in early learning childcare centres. The principles of the Daily 5 (playing, reading, talking, writing, and singing) allow children to get the support they need inside or outside their homes.

These kits are digital instructional manuals for use by anyone who is involved with helping children develop their literacy skills (families, educators, community members, etc.).

Each kit provides valuable information on how a specific strand of the Daily 5 (Talking, Playing, Singing, Writing, Reading) supports language and literacy development. They are evidence-based and provide users with guidance, and practical, hands-on activities that you can do together.

The kits have a variety of activities for children ages 0 to early elementary (grade 2). All documents are in PDF format.

Kits were developed by students in ELCC 1007 (Literacy) during the Winter 2025 term as part of a collaborative effort between the NorQuest Library and the Early Learning and Childcare program.
