Borrowing Guidelines

Guidelines

What is an Interlibrary Loan?

If you want an item for college-related work that is not available through the NorQuest College library, we can request the item from other libraries throughout Canada and beyond on your behalf using the Interlibrary Loans (ILL) service .

Materials you can borrow

You can borrow almost any type of material through Interlibrary Loan, provided that the lending library will loan it or that they can provide a copy without infringing on copyright laws or licensing agreements.

Examples of eligible materials:

  • books
  • audiovisual materials (DVDs, CDs, etc)
  • documents
  • theses and dissertations
  • conference proceedings
  • copies of journal articles and book chapters (PDF)

Materials you can't borrow

Occasionally, some items are not available for interlibrary loan.

Examples include:

  • reference or reserve items
  • entire journal issues
  • rare or archival materials

We will notify you if we are unable to fill your request due to availability of items.

Loan Periods

Physical Items:

Three-week loan period.

The loaning library must approve your request for renewal. If you need to extend the loan period, please contact interlibrary loan services via email (interlibrary.loanrequests@norquest.ca) at least five business days before your current due date

Digital Items:

While digital documents do not need to be returned to the loaning library, some digital copies of journal articles or eBook chapters may become unavailable after a predetermined length of time (for example, fourteen days), or after the file is accessed a certain number of times (for example,  five times), whichever comes first. This is determined by the loaning library's lending policy.

Processing Times

Estimated Wait Times:

  • Digital materials such as articles or eBook chapters: 2-10 business days.
  • Physical materials: 7-21 business days, accounting for transit times.

Processing times depend on:

  • material type (physical or digital)
  • lending library location and processing times
  • delivery method

Response times may vary. Please plan accordingly and submit requests well in advance of when you will need the material.

Picking Up and Returning Items

Pick up

When your requested items arrive, you will be notified by email.

  • Digital material will be attached to the email as a PDF.
  • Physical Item pick up location: NorQuest College, Library Desk

Physical items come with a paper slip attached that indicates the item is an interlibrary loan, the library it is borrowed from, and the due date. Do not remove this band, as it must be returned with the book.

Returns

Physical items can be returned at the Library Desk, or in one of the library's return drop boxes.
