Open Educational Resources

OER created by NorQuest Faculty

What are Open Educational Resources (OER)?

OER are resources that either exist in the public domain, or have been openly licensed so they are free to use, share and adapt. These resources make teaching, learning and research more widely available, reducing barriers to education and knowledge sharing. OER include open textbooks, curricula and other educational materials in any format (UNESCO, n.d.).

More broadly, OER is one component of Open Pedagogy or Open Educational practices which include the use of "open educational resources (OER) to support learning, [and] the open sharing of teaching practices with a goal of improving education and training at the institutional, professional, and individual level" (BCcampus).

Why is NorQuest going open?

OER and open pedagogy can help NorQuest fulfil its strategic plan by supporting inclusive and transformative educational experiences.

To enhance affordability and access for students, NorQuest aims to become a predominantly zero textbook cost institution by 2030. Further, open education can help us create customized textbooks uniquely suited to student needs. By embracing open pedagogy, we can provide our students with unique and challenging real world learning experiences.

NorQuest has already demonstrated its commitment to becoming a leader in open education by co-hosting the 2023 OE Global Conference. This event brought together international leaders in the field to share ideas and connect as we move forward towards a more equitable world.
