Integral concepts in Curriculum Development

Background

Outcomes-based education addresses one fundamental question: ‘What do learners need to be able to do upon completion of the course?’

All curriculum decisions are based on the answers to this question.

Outcomes describe the vision of what a learner will be able to do because of their learning once they leave the classroom. At its most basic level, OBE considers the learner experience along with concepts, skills, issues, outcomes, learning activities, and assessments.

The OBE process is as follows:OBE process

  1. Writing Learning Outcomes
  2. Determining Concepts and Skills
  3. Deciding upon Learning Activities
  4. Aligning Assessment to Outcomes
    1. Assessment Criteria
    2. Assessment Tasks

Creating outcomes-based curriculum means following an approach that puts the learner at the

forefront of the curriculum development process.  This means understanding your learner and

the experiences that your institution wants for its learners.
