“What criteria will learners be judged to have met the learning outcomes”?

In the OBE process, the emphasis is on assessment criteria that clearly model the way for task evaluation, but not assessment tasks themselves; in fact, the criteria outline what has to be done to demonstrate the learning outcome has been met (e.g. minimum requirement), grading criteria that specify standards, and general criteria indicating level of performance (Learning outcomes and assessment criteria, 2018). According to the same source (Learning outcomes…, 2018), good criteria have five elements:

  1. They match the assessment task and the learning outcome
  2. Ensure consistent marking
  3. Inform areas of disagreement between those assessing the work
  4. Help learners to meet the learning outcomes
  5. Can be used to provide feedback to learners

Consider:

  • Do the criteria reference the quality of the work as related to the learning outcome?
  • Do the criteria reference the standard or level of what is required as related to the outcome?
  • Assessment and Evaluation
