Getting Started with Dungeons and Dragons (D&D)

Supplies list

The basic supplies needed to play D&D are:

  • a character sheet
  • a set of dice suitable for tabletop role playing games (TTRPG)
  • a pencil
  • a few interested friends to share the adventures with
  • someone to steer the story along (a Dungeon Master, or DM). This is a person who should have some experience playing D&D.
There are two editions of the D&D rules which are commonly used: 5.5e (2024) and 5e (2014).  Ensure that the resource you are looking at matches the edition you are playing.

Dice

Dice sets need to include the following types of dice: 4 sided (d4), 6 sided (d6), 8 sided (d8), two types of 10 sided dice (d10 and a d%), 12 sided (d12), and 20 sided (d20). Dice sets marked as D&D dice will have all of these within the pack. The video below will explain what the function of each type of die is.
