Prepare your computer

Key computer requirements

  • Only a laptop or desktop computer can be used to write your examChromebooks, tablets, or phones are not allowed.
  • Test your computer in advance and on the day of your exam, prior to writing your exam. You should test your computer at the location where you will be writing your exam. It is your full responsibility to ensure your device is working as intended prior to writing your exam.
    • How to Test Your Equipment: Watch this video to learn how to use the "Test It Out" process to see if your computer works okay. We recommend you do this at the beginning of term so you have time to fix any issues. Test it again the night before or morning of your exam to make sure everything is still okay.
    • Common Test-Taker Challenges: A review of potential technical issues that may arise and how to prevent them.
    • Test-Taker Support Resources: A video guide to how to get more help.
  • Do not use a computer in public place, workplace, or library. NorQuest computers, including library loaned laptops, cannot be used.
  • You cannot use: Linux operating systems, Windows 10 in S mode or Surface RT, and you may not run in a virtual machine.

Programs/software that are not allowed on your device

  • Any kind of remote access program, remote desktop access solutions, or remote desktop software needs to be uninstalled prior to taking your test. You will not be able to take your test if you have these types of programs installed on your device on your exam day.
