Learn to Write

A guide to help you understand the process of writing and types of writing for assignments at NorQuest College.

Academic writing appears in many different forms. The resources on this page are some of the more common types of writing assignments that you may see in your classes.

Ensure you have thoroughly read the guidelines for your assignment, understand them, and are confident that you know what your instructor is looking for before selecting resources to help you on this page. These items are intended to educate and guide you but they do not replace or overrule your instructor's specific tasks and instructions.

Essays (argumentative, critical analysis, etc.)

Argumentative writing might seem similar to persuasive writing but there is one big difference: argumentative writing needs evidence from credible, reliable, and relevant sources of information in order to be considered a valid argument.
Persuasive writing appeals to the reader's emotions without the need to provide relevant evidence. As an example, someone's blog where they write about their life from their perspective can be considered a form of persuasive writing.
