Common Questions

Do we have access to Turnitin or some other kind of plagiarism detection software?

At this point in time, we are unaware of a software being used College-wide.

The general approach to plagiarism and academic integrity at the College is more educational in nature -  because students have many different levels of experience when doing research, it is important to make sure that they learn the skills to do proper research. Much of the relevant research in academic integrity education points to this approach being more effective than software alone. Knowing the process is key especially if they want to, for example, move to a post-secondary program or not end up with a charge of academic misconduct on their transcript (which would affect any study visas if they are an international student). A recommendation is using the software as an additional tool alongside education in basic research skills, which we provide in the Library.

The Library has many in-house resources to educate students, including Prevent Plagiarismthis page in the Early Learning and Child Care guide, and our Learn to Research guides.

Some other online resources that you might find useful:

  • Plagiarism Checker

uses Google to double check your document. This service only checks text by copying and pasting into the website.

  • Viper

made for academic writers and users. Sign up for an account on their website in order to use it.

  • QueText

has unlimited uses, but this service is only able to check if you copy and paste your text into the website.

Duplichecker can check documents that have been uploaded on to their system (or it can check text by copying and pasting into the website).

Are there library resources for Moodle?

There are a handful of options for embedded library support. Including:

  • Library Resources Block
  • Customized Library Block with specific resources
  • Liaison Librarian Contact Information
  • A research/citation forum hosted by a librarian
  • Embedded library tutorials and activities
  • Online APA course (option: connect to gradebook to verify completion)

Review and request your options at this link: https://norquest.libwizard.com/f/embed

If you would like to add these resources yourself, we have a guide with step-by-step instructions: https://libguides.norquest.ca/linking/

You can also connect with your Library Liasion who can answer any questions you may have.

How do I suggest an item (book, audiobook, film, etc.), for the collection?

Please submit your suggestions using the "Suggest an item for the library" form here: https://library.norquest.ca/find.aspx

How can casual instructors get access to library materials?

We can get casual faculty access set up for you! We require some information to complete a profile and will require you to complete a consent form.

Can you help with Academic Integrity?

  • The OSJA runs an Academic Integrity Course that can be added to Moodle Courses.
  • Librarians can address plagiarism and offering paraphrasing guidance during instruction sessions.
  • There are also online guides to orient students to Plagiarism and How to Research.

I would like to post a book chapter on Moodle. How can the library help?

Please consult with the Copyright Officer, Nicholle Carriere.

There is also a comprehensive resource about Copyright available here: https://libguides.norquest.ca/cdev-toolkit-requirements/copyright

Can I place items on reserve?

To ensure equitable access to key resources, including required textbooks, the Library manages heavily-used material using the “reserve” system.

Reserve items:

  • Identified by instructors for the purpose of “on-campus use only”
  • Kept securely at the main library desk
  • Textbooks and calculators can be borrowed for up to 3 hours
  • Other reserve items such as phone chargers and white board markers can be borrowed for 24 hours

If you are an instructor and you want to place textbooks or required readings on reserve, please contact library@norquest.ca or complete this form.

Sourcing, ordering, and processing items for the Reserve Collection can take several weeks. Please submit your request a minimum of three weeks in advance if you would like the material available by a specific date. Reserve requests are accepted year-round.
